I was looking at my childhood photographs and reminds me the effort my mother spent on getting me ready to school. The 3 or 4 year old girl with boy cut with a little "juttu" and flower decorated. I was a very naughty brat and would make my mother run around to get me ready. She thought the best way to reduce her time is, getting me a boy cut just the way my neighbouring kids had!

My cousins who were much elder to me had long hair and would make hairstyles on each other to show off. In South India, at least, every little girl or a boy would have a photo posing for the "moggina jaDe"[made of jasmine] I would cry to my mother that I need a photo of Moggina jaDe with my real long hair. She decided not to cut it any longer.

Image downloaded from internet from the movie: Moggina jaDe in Kannada
I started going to the school with my waist length hair, thick and black and made me proud. The school had the below rule for long haired girls. If not adhered, thou shall be fined.
Anything below the shoulder was termed "long":

Steps for braiding:
1. Hair should be partitioned into two equal halves.
2. Each partitioned has 3 legs (of hair)
3. The hair is braided till the end and then ribbons are attached
4. The braided hair is then folded and the ribbons are tied up and knotted.

The braiding was so time consuming that I would reach late to school sometimes and be punished. :(
But my mother patiently did it everyday and I started to learn from it. Soon, it wasn't as boring as I thought and started experimenting new hairstyles.

Until school, my hair was oiled everyday. Most of them at school would ask, "which hair oil or shampoo do you use?" and I would blush and tell my mom after reaching home.

This is how I looked while I was in primary school with the red ribbons. :) This is the only photograph that has been preserved with the red ribbons. :D
My school pic with the long braids and red ribbon :D

As I started attending college, I no longer had two braids but only one. My waist length hair had now reached my knees. I could not find a swimming cap matching my hair length. My swimming instructor would admire my long hair. :)

Applying oil at college grown up was out of fashion. It was only during the weekend or else hair would look messy on weekday. Soon, the hair ends started to split and looked ugly when the ends were not braided. I could see trimming my hair as the only option. The beautician would reluctantly cut my hair and was disheartened,"why do you want to cut your beautiful hair just for the split ends?" and she would cut less than an inch. But the problem did not solve.
My long braided hair (present)
It so happened just the way Rapunzel (a famous fairy tale studied at school) had to cut her long hair reluctant for no good!

Rapunzel: Fairy Tale
I hope my waist length hair grows and kiss a good bye to trimming my hair with the use of Dove Split End rescue shampoo which brings the split ends together and your hair has 4x lesser split ends.
I received the samples, used them and found both the shampoo and conditioner to be gentle and soft on my hair. I hope the split ends would soon disappear with the regular use. :)

April 1998, Bangalore:

I was in class 8 and my final exams were scheduled. My granny fell ill all of sudden and my mother had to travel to her native to see her. I am the only child to my parents and my mother was reluctant to leave me alone at home especially during the exams since my father would arrive only late evening from work. She has been the best teacher to me and would help in revising the syllabus during the exams and the results would always be flying colors. She advised me to study well and not to trouble dad while she was away.

R~ was my new neighbour and hardly acquainted to him. We were just "hi, bye" friends and I never got a chance to interact during the busy exam schedule. I would reach home from school early and he would advise me to lock the doors while I was alone preparing for the exam.

"Never open the door until your father arrives," he would say. And I nodded "Yes" in agreement.

Be it a salesman who would constantly bug to buy products knocking the door or any stranger, he would enquire the purpose of their visit and shoo them. He always kept an eye.

When my mother returned, I explained to her, how R~ took care of her little daughter and mother was happy to know about my new found brother. :)

He had even told me to let him know if anyone bullied me at school or on my way home, I would inform him. I never felt an absence of a brother.

In 2001, he left to Sydney for higher studies and the absence of a brother was felt very much.

March 2012, Australia:

It was my first time travel away from home to a foreign land where I had to live for an year in Melbourne. My parents would sometimes worry, their only daughter is safe or not, whom would she approach if she needs any help in Melbourne that was 5,000 miles away from Bangalore and this friend always assured that I was all good.

My good friend was in Sydney guiding me on several things like taking a house on lease, obtaining a learners license, professional environment in Australia and many more things. I was confident this friend would always be there at times good and bad and would help even without asking.

R~ has been a soldier to me all times and a real hero, unlike those shown on silver screen.

As I write this post, I am sure this soldier will always protect no matter where I am.

It was a Rakhi gift from Sudipta who got it all the way from US. I like the strong fragrance and loved this. Thanks for wonderful gift. :)

The bottle is a cute round shaped pink colored and I never felt this throwing it though it is empty.

Linkedin sent me an email in Feb this year which I missed reading. I hardly read the emailers sent frequently from the social networks. I was deleting old unread emails and this one suddenly caught my attended.

My Linkedin profile is one among the top 10% most viewed profile in 2012. More people stalking my profile or trying to contact for a job opportunity? I am surprised.

What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a social networking website for people in professional occupations. Founded in December 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003,it is mainly used for professional networking. As of January 2013, LinkedIn reports more than 200 million acquired users in more than 200 countries and territories. [Souce: wiki]
It makes us happy to receive a postcard or a greeting card from friends and cousins from distant places. As a child, I always collected the post cards with the beautiful scenery, soft toys and gods. I have preserved both the printed and the hand made cards. When someone sends a greeting card in an envelop with a stamp on it, I would remove the stamp with care and add them to my philately collection. This is how, I collected many stamps from India and overseas.

Jan 8th 2013, I signed up Postcrossing that brought me, the memories of childhood when we conveyed greetings to friends and cousins a colorful card, hand written message that gave a personal touch. I am sure all of us still wish to receive a hand made card than a forwarded SMS or an email which we would delete or reply "wish you the same"... How many still send greeting card? :)

I had clicked so many photos that I decided to get them printed as a postcard and send it to my friends across the globe. A couple of weeks later, they were happy to see a postcard being sent to them. A friend of mine sent this photo where he had the postcard pinned up at his cube.

How postcrossing works? Send a post card to a random person in the world in turn you will receive a post card from a random person. This works! Sign up postcrossing to send and receive the postcards.

I was looking at some of the photographs on my phone and this one suddenly caught my attention, the Vienna Art & Design at Melbourne during winter '11.

Vienna: Art & Design was held at Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria covering the art works from famous Gustav Klimt, an  Austrian symbolic painter, Egon Schiele, an Austrian painter, Josef Hoffmann, an Austrian Architect, Adolf Loos, an Austro-Hungarian architect. The exhibition was a part of Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2011 from 18 JUN 2011 - 09 OCT 2011. It was the first time I had been to an art exhibition that was from Vienna. It focused on how the artists, writers and musicians contributed to the modern Vienna during 1900.

I was happy to learn so much on the art and music of Vienna that I would stand staring at some of the paintings before moving on to the next. The trams in Melbourne are a replica from what you see in the Vienna. :)

If there is an exhibit on Vienna, then don't miss the chance.
Ticket Pricing in Australia:
Adult $24
Child (aged 5-15) $12

Title: My lawfully wedded husband and other stories (2012)

Author:  Madhulika Liddle

Published by: Westland Ltd

Pages: 215

This is the first book, I am reading from this author, though I haven't read her earlier books: The Englishman’s Cameo (2009), The Eighth Guest & Other Muzaffar Jang Mysteries (2011).
Thanks to blogadda for sending me a copy of this book. I was impressed seeing the cover of the book.

Most people mistake the title of the book to be, "My lawfully wedded husband", when I first searched for the book on google, it merely displayed the same results but the actual title is "My lawfully wedded husband and other stories." As the name suggests, the book is a collection of 12 short shorties.

Each of the 12 stories have an an interesting concept and the author has narrated imagining herself in their shoes. The endings of few stories can be predicted well and for few it is a twist. My personal choice of short stories are: A tale of summer vacation, St George and the dragon, and My lawfully wedded husband (title of the book itself). The story keeps you guessing till the end.
The other stories with predictable ending: A brief lesson in trust, Number 63, Hourie, Silent fear and The Crusader which could have been written with a better twist in the tale.

Sum Total: A little girl who has always been taught to stay mum and patient no matter how rude others are. As she grows into a young woman how she tries to get rid of those who trouble her in a gentle way.
A Tale of Summer Vacation: A little girl who spends summer at her granny's making friends with two sisters which develops in a wonderful plot.
A Brief Lesson in Trust: Never trust anyone nor show your weakness, you never know who is going to make a fool out of you.
Feet of Clay: A little girl who loves eating snacks everyday from vendor who is best at story telling and discovers one day he is gone without understanding the reason at her age.
My Lawfully Wedded Husband: The husband who always remained silent before his wife and the wife is always happy about this.
Number 63: An old lady in the neighbourhood is suddenly in trouble and how does she handle the situation.
On the Night Train: It is always good to have a companion on your compartment especially when you are all alone on the train traveling a long distance.
Hourie: A story of how a call girl changing from Hourie to Helen, to become famous.
Silent Fear: When you scare someone speaking of the ghost, the same person can even turn out to be a ghost.
St George and the Dragon: Who is the dragon and who is George?
The Crusader: A story of a young couple who had to pay a price for the mistake they did!
The Howling Waves of Tranquebar: The story revolves on the history of Tranquebar that you are lost imaging what happened .. ?
Most of the stories cover a wide range of people: the rich, poor and middle class.. and are mainly based on women from a young adolescent, a working professional, a call girl, a homemaker...

Overall, the author has used a wide range of vocabulary. Some narrations have a crispy ending and a moral too. It is a juicy book and one cannot take the book off having read it.

I would rate 3.5 on scale 5.

Uttara Bhoopa is a famous book written by BeeChi (Rayasam Bheemasena Rao), a well-known Kannada humorist. I bought this book a couple of years ago but never had a chance to read it. However, I was lucky to see the drama directed by Antaranga at H.N Kalakshetra, Bangalore on 29th Dec 12.

The play starts with a couple's discussion on finding a suitable match for their daughter. The couple think how the to be son in law should be in terms of the maturity, character.. so on and so forth. But their daughter is of different opinion and thinks she can find the man of her choice. The couple and daughter have an argument unlike any other parents or children do. The couple decide to publish an advertisement in the newspaper to find a suitable groom and the expected qualities. They interview the young men who had applied and finally, manage to select the three. Now, the daughter is in difficult position whom to select among the three.

The play is a comedy and you would love every joke. I am yet to read the book and I am sure I can complete reading the book in a day or two. ;)

Does she find the man of her choice or reluctantly marry one among the three chosen by her parents? Find it by yourself seeing the play at the next theatre.

Cost of the ticket - Rs 70/-

Duration of the play - 90 mins

The year 2012 was a very memorable one with lot of learning, happiness, sadness, going places on my own and last but not the least, coming back to hometown and meet my family and friends after an year and five months. I was sad to leave Melbourne, Australia and at the same time happy to meet my parents after a long time. As I have mentioned in my earlier posts from Melbourne, it was my first time, away from home, living in  another country which was 5585 miles from Bangalore. Melbourne has its own charm which cannot be expressed in words. No wonder it has been ranked the most livable city in the world and any one would fall in love for first time and so did I. :D

When I would ask someone who was in the US, "Don't you miss anything here?" and they would reply,"What do you expect to miss?". The same happened to me. Melbournians were always kind enough and always amicable to anyone who come there. I would like to narrate an incident where I fell on the footpath. People walking around came to help me get up and left until they were assured I was all fine and no injury. I felt this gentleness was missing in my home country itself where you are injured on road side and none comes for your help which is sad!

I had a chance to watch IPL, ODI (India Vs Australia) and Footy matches at MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) and also witness huge Indian crowd singing "why this kolaveri di".. Opera House, monorail, the world famous Bondi beach, jet boating, cemetery at Brunti, John Carter at IMAX, climbing the Harbour Bridge, meeting an friend after a decade at Sydney! Kangaroo Island at Adelaide, Tesselar Tulip Festival, Cooks Cottage, Great Ocean Drive, meeting backpackers at Tasmania, Steam engine train at Puffing Billy, Grampians, Melbourne Aquarium, Werribee zoo. Long working hours at office made a way to new hobby: Swimming and work outs at Fitness First. ;)

A three day holiday, exploring Singapore all alone where I reach Merlion at 1 AM and folks who see me would question-"Are you all by yourself?" I would smile,"yeah, Singapore is safe place where you can roam around alone even during midnight."

Back home, it was time to spend time with family and friends. Gokarna beaches with Sneha, Kannada play "Uttara Bhupa", same old day to day not interesting routines which anyone would crib about.

I realized huge difference what we gather about the West from media or word of the mouth and you, having lived abroad which I would explain in upcoming posts.
