Sparrow!
Commonly called 'gubbachi' in Kannada. Anyone could spot these sparrows a couple of years ago. I used to see them during my school days. Haven't seen them in the recent years. Are these species of bird becoming extinct? :(
Lucky to have captured them at Mysore Infy, last sunday :D

ReplyDeleteI too had same questions for many for my friednds..they say that they all died due to the mobile tower radition. But I get to see these lil beautiful creatures in my town.I still feed them when I get a chance.

Was there in Mysore campus for a month.. was surprised to see so many Sparrows on FCs...
ReplyDelete"Gubbachi" or Common house sparrows are easily gullible. They were massively hunted by tribal people leaving in the slums of bangalore called "Hakki Pikki". They shoot sparrows with stones in an indegeniously made catapaults.Sparrow is a delicacy for them.
ReplyDeleteUrban crows are also one of the main reason for decline in sparrow population. They either chase away the sparrows or else kill them.
But you can still find gubbachi in small towns and villages.
@ Raghu, Sparrows are rarely seen or I would say NOT seen in Bangalore at all :( They are seen only in towns or villages.

@ Satish, Even heard that dhabas around kill them for their living. Not sure how true it is. Some measures should be taken taken to protect them!

ReplyDeletePaapa Gubbachis. Why do people kill them? In the US they are really Dumma! (very cute). I love to see them chrip and hop on the ground. But they are considered a nuisance and kill native species like bluebirds:(
